The Deli Downstairs, Austin, TX

I was foolish — so very foolish — to think that I would post every day at SXSW, or even post a recap. Look, man, things got all crazy and now I’m moving to Florida for a new job. Beach! Sunshine! Design! Code! BUT! This blog is about food, and although I have let you down in the past (and no doubt will again in the future), I am here, now, posting, and that’s what matters most. Right?

Let’s talk about The Deli Downstairs.

First of all, I would have never found this place if it wasn’t for the Yelp iPhone app. I was walking, I was hungry, and it happened to be located about a block away. And it’s nestled deep within the labyrinthine passageways of a semi-creepy office building. No, really, it’s ridiculous. So here’s a pictorial guide of how to find the place.

1. Look for the relatively teeny sign on 7th street.

2. Proceed through the imposing iron gates, through the postapocalyptic brick courtyard, and past the smoking man. Enter the far door.

3. Turn left, go past the elevators, and turn left again. Make sure to look like you know what you’re doing so the guy in the office at the end of the hall to the right doesn’t stare at you.

4. It’s the last door on the right. Congratulations! You’ve made it. Make sure to forget to take a picture of the inside of the deli because you’re too busy trying to look like you know what you’re doing.

And why, you ask, should I go through all of this trouble? What if I lose hope halfway across the Brick Expanse? What if the Guy At The End Of The Hall breaks my spirit with his awkward stares?

Because THIS.

And THIS.

That, doubting readers, is a hot, tender, roast beef sandwich on freshly baked bread, accompanied by a delicious, tangy habanero-soaked pickle and an Imperial Sugar Dr. Pepper in a glass bottle. If you ever happen to find yourself in Austin (or have a permanent residence there, for some reason), you have absolutely no excuse not to visit this fine establishment.

When I do drink regular soda (I mostly drink diet) I prefer to enjoy a Dublin Dr Pepper. Good stuff.
